The design of the J/44 was inspired by an analysis of the 1988 Newport to Bermuda Race which determined that dual-purpose racer/cruisers between 41 and 45 feet were the most popular offshore type and size boat. Since introduction, the J/44 has become the most successful large, offshore American yacht design ever, with a total of nearly 70 boats launched.
Phoenix, hull #40, was launched in Australia where she was totally equipped to do ocean and long distance racing/cruising. She arrived in the USA in 2001. Upon arrival, the new owner had her hull painted Stars & Stipe Blue and the topsides (non-skid) painted Gun Metal Gray.
