Accommodations

The deckhouse includes a full-function, inside helm station to starboard with excellent sightlines.  To port is a charting table with plotting computer.  Matching settees are on each side, visibility is 360 degrees in climate-controlled comfort.

The accommodations deck is five steps down:   seven cabins offer berths for as many as thirteen.   Owner’s cabin is to port at the companionway with double berth, appropriate storage and ensuite head and shower compartment.   Additional guest cabins are distributed port and starboard on either side of the central passageway.  Each cabin has an upper / lower arrangement with the lower berth as an  oversized single.  Each is also equipped with vanity and sink.

A day head with integral shower space is just forward of the dining area;  an additional head compartment with stall shower is forward to starboard.

Galley and dining is amidships with a dining table large enough for the entire ship’s company.  The galley is fully modernized with 28 sq.ft. of stainless countertop (one piece) in an efficient U shape, stainless fridge / freezer, double sink and a four-burner cooktop with oven.

Interior fit and finish is what one would expect on a classic: raised-panel mahogany with gloss varnish, teak and holly soles, Corian-type  surfaces in the head compartments,  ash hull ceilings, polished bronze portlights and white T&G headliners.  The interior of SUMMERWIND shows exquisite good taste and is both elegant and understated.

History

Designed by John G. Alden, the foremost schooner designer of the time, she was built by C.A. Morse in Thomaston, Maine and launched in 1929 as Queen Tyi.  Shortly thereafter, she was sold and renamed SEA GYPSY.  She became a noteworthy racing schooner and charter yacht but was pressed into service during the Second World War as a patrol vessel.

Following that service, she moved to the Med where she continued as a popular charter yacht. For ease of handling she was converted from a gaff to a staysail schooner.  She benefitted from periodic refits but by 2006 was in need of some sustained attention.  She was purchase in Spain by an American yachtsman who shipped her to Palm Beach for a comprehensive refit.  Wooden boat specialists Moore’s Marine accepted the challenge of returning her to like new condition.  She was almost entirely replanked, every structural element was evaluated and either restored or replaced.  All engineering systems were redesigned and replaced.  Refit expenditures exceeded 8M USD but her rechristening as SUMMERWIND was worth the effort.  She placed first in class in the 2009 Newport Bucket regatta and earned the admiration of this sailing town.

Her present owner has continued the upgrade pattern:  in 2014 her Sitka spruce main and foremast were replaced with GMT carbon spars, painstakingly hand-painted with a faux spruce pattern. A suite of new Spectra sails were added to her inventory.   She is available in turn-key condition to continue her winning ways.

Remarks

As a staysail schooner with powered winches, SUMMERWIND is a relatively simple yacht to sail and does not require a large compliment of crew.  She would serve well as a family cruising yacht or charter yacht.
A comprehensive inventory is available upon request.
