Boatswain’s Locker started in 1939, when the Orange County coastline was still largely undeveloped and had a relatively small boating community. Captain John Reckman opened a boatyard in Newport Beach, naming it “Boatswain’s Locker” (pronounced ‘bosun’) after the officer in charge of a ships’ storage locker. The fledgling company began as one of the first businesses to service boats in the Newport Harbor area. The business flourished, and as the population grew, Newport Harbor was fast becoming the boating center for Orange County.
In the early 1960’s, in addition to being a service facility, Boatswain’s Locker began selling and installing engines, and they soon became the repowering specialists for the Newport Harbor boating community.
In 1986, the business was sold to Dan Gribble. Dan grew up in the boatyard, working on weekends and during summer vacations, learning everything about the business from the ground up. He staffed the company with energetic personnel who share his views of providing quality customer service. Over the years, Boatswain’s Locker has grown to become one of the most respected marine distributors in the Southwestern United States.
Boatswain’s is very active in the boating community - besides sponsoring Start Me Up and Alliance, both sport fishing boats, at various events and tournaments - the company is a major sponsor of “Kids for Fishing,” a program that provides children with the opportunity to go boating and learn to fish - as well as the “Governor’s Cup,” a sailboat regatta that enables young men and women around the world to compete in sailing competitions.
In addition, Boatswain’s Locker supports the “Catalina Conservancy,” by working together with the community to keep Catalina Island clean and pristine.
